About the Barcode Generator
Make a barcode for a product label, an inventory shelf, a ticket or a school project. This barcode generator creates Code 128 barcodes for letters, numbers and symbols, and EAN-13 barcodes like those on shop products. Download the result as a PNG or a sharp SVG. Everything runs in your browser.
Code 128 is a flexible format that can encode any printable English character. It switches between internal character sets automatically to keep the barcode short. EAN-13 encodes exactly 13 digits, the last of which is a check digit that lets scanners spot misreads.
The check digit is worked out from the first 12 digits. Digits in odd positions are multiplied by 1 and digits in even positions by 3, and the check digit is the amount needed to bring the total up to the next multiple of 10. If you enter 12 digits, the tool adds the check digit for you. If you enter 13, it checks that the last digit is correct. The barcode is drawn with the jsbarcode library, which is only loaded on this page. Real retail EAN codes are issued by GS1, so use a code you own before selling a product.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Code 128 and EAN-13?
Code 128 holds text of varying length and is used for shipping and inventory. EAN-13 holds 13 digits and is the standard for products sold in shops.
What is a check digit?
It is a final digit calculated from the others so that scanners can detect mistakes. This tool calculates it for you.
Can I use these barcodes in a shop?
Retail EAN numbers are allocated by GS1 and linked to your company. You can make the picture here, but you need a properly assigned number to sell through retailers.
Why will my barcode not scan?
Try thicker bars, more height and a clear white margin around the code, and print it at a good quality. Avoid curved or shiny surfaces.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The barcode is drawn in your browser and what you type is never sent anywhere.
