About the Tip Calculator
Splitting a restaurant bill should not need mental maths. This tip calculator adds your chosen tip to the bill, then divides everything between the number of people, so you can see the tip, the total and what each person pays in seconds. Use the quick buttons for common tip percentages or type your own.
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each person's share is the total divided by the number of people. The tip per person is the tip divided by the same number.
For example, an 85.50 bill with an 18% tip gives a tip of 15.39 and a total of 100.89. Shared between three people, each pays 33.63. The calculator splits the bill evenly and does not round up. If you prefer round figures, adjust the tip percentage until the per-person amount suits you. The tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill you enter, so enter the amount you want the tip based on.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
It depends on the country and the service. In the US, 15% to 20% is common in restaurants. In many other countries, tipping is smaller or included in the bill.
Should I tip on the pre-tax amount?
Many people do, and this calculator works on whatever bill figure you enter, so you can choose either.
Can I split the bill unevenly?
Not in this tool. It divides the total equally between the people you enter.
What if the service charge is already included?
Set the tip to 0% to see the bill split without any extra tip.
Why do I see fractions of a cent?
Amounts are rounded to two decimals for display. Small rounding differences of a cent may appear when you add up the shares.
